President Obama had good reason to stand tall as he touted his commitment to clean energy and to environmental and public health protections in his Jan. 24 State-of-the-Union address and as he unveiled his 2013 budget on Monday.

During his administration, America has made historic progress toward curbing harmful pollutions that contaminate our air, water, lands and wildlife — and contribute to asthma attacks, heart attacks and even premature deaths.

These accomplishments are all the more noteworthy because the president faced down polluters and a hostile House of Representatives that, led by Tea Dancing extremists, cast almost 200 anti-environment votes last year. We and our supporters all across the country have stood with him in this fight and we will continue to do so.

In December, the Environmental Protection Agency announced the first-ever national standards to reduce mercury, lead, and other pollution from coal- and oil-burning power plants. These safeguards are likely to be among the Obama Administration’s most significant environmental accomplishments.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that damages developing brains in and fetuses. Prenatal exposure to even low levels of mercury can cause life-long troubles with language skills, fine motor function, and the ability to pay attention.

Coal-fired power plants are the largest industrial source of mercury emissions, yet they have dodged mercury and other air toxics rules for decades. Virtually every other major industrial sector in the United States has been subject to such standards for more than 10 years.

Thanks to the new standards, these polluters will finally have to clean up their act. As a result, the standards will prevent 4,700 heart attacks and 130,000 asthma attacks every year.

While cracking down on polluters, the Obama Administration also has been promoting clean energy solutions that will create jobs and unleash innovation.

In July, the president proposed a new round of fuel-efficiency standards for cars, SUVs, and pick-up trucks that will double car miles per gallon to 54.5 mpg by 2025.

Such improvements to vehicles within 20 years will reduce carbon pollution by 280 million metric tons — the equivalent of shutting 70 coal-fired power plants for a year. And by 2030, the fuel efficiency standards will also cut our oil use by more than we imported from Saudi Arabia and Iraq in 2010 and save drivers more than $80 billion a year at the pump.

Building more efficient cars has already put Americans to work. More than 150,000 Americans currently have jobs making parts for and assembling clean automobiles — hybrids, electric cars, and other advanced vehicles that weren’t available 10 years ago. That’s why the automobile industry, labor unions, and the environmental community are united in supporting the president’s clean vehicle standards.

To be sure, the Obama Administration also has ceded ground on some issues to polluters. Its decisions to postpone smog standards and leave the door open to offshore drilling in the Arctic will benefit dirty industries and make it harder for Americans to protect our health and resources. So our work goes on. And we are in this for the long haul.

In the meantime, all Americans benefit from having cleaner skies and more home-grown clean energy.

Even in the face of a year of unprecedented and unrelenting congressional assault on the environment, President Obama has proven that prosperity fits hand-in-hand with clean air and clean water, and strong public health protections.

We have a shared responsibility to protect our environment and health. Future generations deserve nothing less. Let’s keep building on this progress.

“Seize the Moment” This is one of my favorite sayings. How often do we take advantage of the MOMENT? The moment is instantaneous. What happens right now will not happen again, ever! Will you remember the moment?

Photography is the art of capturing an image of that moment. It could be a face, a plant or a mountain. It could be something that will be there tomorrow but will look different or it could be something that be seen again. I read in a comic book once of a conversation between a dad and son. The young son asked his why old pictures were always in black and white and new were in color? His father said there was always color film in the old days, but the world was only in black and white then! It was funny but some of our most famous photography “artist” worked in black and white such as Ansel Adams. He and so many others were artists that couldn’t make up their work but had to capture it at the right instant of time.

I was going through some with my wife the other day. Some of them would take my breath away. They were images captured in time of babies in our family. Some of these babies are now 5, 8, 10, 14, 17 years of age. They are my children, nephews and nieces. Some of them are of my wife and her sisters. They’re baby pictures! They are an instant caught in time. They were either taken by my in-laws or given to them as gifts. They may not have been present at the time the photo was taken but they had that image of that instant in time to carry with them until they died. These images were no different than the images that Ansel Adams gave me as a gift when he photographed San Francisco bay where the Golden Gate Bridge is before it was built. He gave me a memory that I could not have had otherwise. My family and my sister-in-laws’ families gave my mother -in-law and father-in-law memories that they would never have had if it were not for photography.

Even if you aren’t a great photographer, a picture is still worth a 1,000 words. When a newborn baby comes home from the hospital and the family and extended family come by to see him or her, what comes out? Of course, the cameras come out and snapping. I learned two schools of thought from photographers that I took courses from. One was in a roll of 36 exposures, 34 be the top quality that you intend to sell. The other photographer taught that in a roll of 36 exposures, 2-3 quality that are worthy of selling. What I learned from this is spend your time taking posed but keep snapping for candid photos.

If you are taking pictures of babies or children, take your time for both types of photos. I personally do not like posed photography but that is me. I prefer to capture a child that is at play trying to solve a issue or just being natural. I like the expressions when they are deep in thought or interacting with other children. I found a of my son that I took through a vehicle window when he was five holding his hand up with his fingers stretched out. That photo is so memorable to me because I sent it to my mother before she passed away. It was exactly the same photo that my mom took of me when I was five years old.

Surf through just a few photographers’ websites, and not only will you come to terms with the range in calibre, but also the proliferation of photographic styles. Many of the terms used to describe these styles can also be confusing because they are used interchangeably and sometimes inconsistently.

Reportage photography  is also referred to as photojournalism or documentary photography; and is often used to describe an unobtrusive approach in which the photographer does not direct the wedding couple or guests at all. Instead the photography captures the flow of the day  – in a creative way as possible – as it would naturally happen.

Traditional wedding photography is probably the most confusing description, but many people use it to depict old fashioned line-ups of wedding guests and family. But it is also used to describe any photographic posing of the couple.

Contemporary wedding photography (sometimes confusingly used interchangeably with reportage photography because it is modern!) can refer, for example, to poses with modern, urban or colourful backgrounds. Or perhaps because the image has a strong camera tilt, an avant-garde feel, or simply just that it contains a new innovative fashion pose.

My advice is not to get hung up labels. First, the labels can be sometimes more confusing than helpful. Second, styles of photography often do not fit neatly into one category or another anyway. Third, it gives the impression that wedding photographers offer, or should offer just one style throughout the wedding (indeed I get bored listening to photographers’ arguments about which style is superior).

My view is that weddings are rarely suited to just one style. Photographers will typically need to draw on many skill-sets during the day. Photographers cannot for example, start posing couples – or ask them to move to a better light – during the wedding ceremony. Equally, it is very rare for a couple not to expect some photographs within a formal framework which shows them in their best light. And even the most modern of weddings will still have a few traditional family shots.

Many photographers will of course excel in one type of skill over the other and indeed emphasise and market it. I often describe my own style as classical with a fashion edge, although I have to rely on a mix of genres – including reportage – during the day. I emphasise the importance of directed photography, because, within the very tight time scales of a wedding, I think that it is important to spend at least 30 minutes partially directing/posing the couple away from the attention of the guests. The key objective for me here is to give the couple flattering, fine art photographs that they will probably never have taken again.

Choosing Your Photographer

As a couple, the key starting point for choosing your photographer is your aspiration for the photography. Some couples see photography in much more traditional sense: they would like a professional, reliable record of the day; but they do not want to interrupt the flow of the day too greatly.

Other couples love photography in its own right, and having a creative and evocative set of photographs – particularly of themselves – is an important and integral part of the day. They might be aiming at high end photography.

Once you are clear on aspirations, examining photographers’ galleries for quality and style is much more important than descriptive labels as we have seen. But galleries merely represent the photographer’s best work, so it is important to also ask to see whole weddings to check for consistency and to see how the style translates itself into the different requirements of the day. Wedding couples and guests are not on a photo shoot, but there to celebrate the day and party, so it would be unrealistic to expect a whole set of images from a single wedding to look the same as the photographer’s portfolio!

Photography awards are another guide to the quality of a photographer’s work, and you would expect him or her to be a qualified member of a professional body such as the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) in the UK.

Equally importantly, as you will spend a fair amount of time on your wedding day with the photographer, you should ensure that you have a good rapport – and that you share the same photography goals. As well as photographic flair, you and your guests are likely to value a high level of experience, organisation and professionalism on the day. Finally you will need to consider the album ranges offered.

Budgeting For Photography

It is, of course, impossible to advise generally on the appropriate level of budget. But what should be given careful consideration is the allocation of your total wedding budget between the competing elements of your day.

Professional wedding photography will shape your memories of the day. You are entrusting a particular photographer to use their skill to represent your day through their eyes. Wedding planners often tell me about couples who regretted not allocating more of their budget on wedding photography. In fact, the wedding planners who I work with often advise clients to budget for a few high-end suppliers and, if necessary, cut back on guest numbers.

The price of wedding photography sometimes surprises prospective wedding clients. But is stands to reason that the scarcer the skill the higher the price that can be commanded by the best photographers. It should also be borne in mind that photographers need to plan the day, shoot the day itself, and then spend at least two further days on processing the images and designing the album. Ultimately you have to make a decision on the importance of high quality wedding photography and consider whether it is a price worth paying.

There are so many thousands of scrapbook techniques that you can do and each one gives a different look to the family photos. One technique that you rarely see is a layering project that brings pictures to the foreground while inserting various related pictures in the background. The technique lends dimension and fun to ordinary photos and is very easy to accomplish.

Using cutouts from magazines, books, brochures and such is very important when it comes to the layering technique. Choose a pic then look closely at it to see what you can cut out to go with it. For example, if you have a photo of your child catching a football, obvious choices for cutouts might be trees, a football field or football goal, a clear blue sky, etc. Start by a huge of trees and paste it into the scrapbook. Then cut the football goal picture smaller than the trees picture and affix it to the tree picture. Next you can add the actual pic which has been cut to the actual shape of the kid with the football, rather than affixed as a rectangular photo.

The amount of dimension and cutouts you add to your pic is up to you. Leave your football arrangement as-is or continue adding more images to the collage. You can cut out the people from a group photo and put them by the trees, as if they were spectators, add birds in the trees, or even a picture of a deer in the background – the total collage is arrangement is up to you.

The dimensional scrapbook arrangements can be made with just about any photo. A wedding can have cutouts like a huge cake beside the couple, an angel hovering behind the couple, or even a picture of the president in the background, as one of the guests!

The layering technique makes fun scrapbooks for kids. Pictures of them in the tub can include a cutout of their favorite cartoon character playing in the bubbles with the child. Or, if you have a picture of your child outdoors you can put a swing set cutout in the background with several of the child’s favorite characters on the swings and slide.

The most important thing when adding the cutouts to each other is to trim them exactly. You’ll find plenty of photos to add to your layouts by looking through books and magazines around the house, and even other sources, like posters, grocery ads, catalogs, post cards, greeting cards, and even images cut from cloth.

Ideas of things you can add to your scrapbook layout include houses, streets, cars, pets, famous people, famous places, waterfalls, bridges, balloons, planets, wild animals, toys, caption bubbles, electronics, signs, musical instruments, clouds with lightning bolts, foods, advertising icons – just about anything.

Make sure when you’re using the layering technique for your scrapbook that you don’t use so many layers that the book won’t close properly. Five or six layers of images is a reasonable amount, but depending upon how thin or thick the cutouts are, you could use more or less than that.

You can still use other scrapbook supplies with the layering technique, such as borders, plaques, name tags, ribbons and buttons, but you’ll want to avoid individual frames for each image. You can, however, frame the entire page.

Have fun with the layering technique and let the children join in, too. Start by slicing up lots of magazines and catalogs then that suit the pic you’ll be adding to the collage. It’s a cute look for your scrapbook page and can be done in so many ways, you’ll want to do lots of pages in this manner.

Travel Destinations: Shaoxing, China

With a country as massive as China, there are so many places and attractions to visit. Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong are the most popular destinations in China, but there are other cities which offer just as much as these.

When travelling through Zhejiang Province, why not visit the wonderful town of Shaoxing. With a population of 4.3 million, it lies just 67km southeast of Hangzhou. It is a water town, a Chinese version of Venice, with its winding canals, arched bridges and historical buildings. The canals are still used today, but the town itself has undergone some modernization and lost some of that ancient Chinese romanticism that many western travellers fall in love with. Despite this, however, Shaoxing still has much to offer.

Shaoxing was the capital of the Yue kingdom from 770 to 211 BCE but has been an administrative and agricultural centre throughout history. Shaoxing has been the birthplace and home to some of the most important and vibrant figures from history, including the artist Xu Wei, the female hero Qiu Jin and China’s first great modern writer Lu Xun.

There are several great sights to visit here in Shaoxing. Take a trip to Lu Xun’s former residence. Lu Xun (1881 – 1936) is one of China’s greatest novelists, the author of ‘Diary of a Madman’ and ‘Medicine’. He was born and raised here until he was sent abroad to study. When he returned he taught at Guangzhou’s Zhongshan University and entombed in Shanghai. His home and buildings, known as the Lu Xun Zhonglu, are open to the public and here you can gain a sense of the man from these items.

Why not visit the Yingtian Pagoda. It was originally constructed during the Song dynasty and part of a temple but was destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion. It has since been rebuilt and stands on top of a hill, giving you some views of the city.

King Yu’s Mausoleum is another famous attraction. According to legends, Yu the Great became the first emperor of the Xia dynasty in 2205 BCE. He earned the name ‘tamer of floods’ as he was able to overcome the great dragons that caused floods. During the 6th century, a temple and mausoleum complex was built in his honour and over the long centuries, new features were added. It is located about 4km southeast of the city centre. It comprises the 24 meter high Main Hall, the Memorial Hall and the Meridian Gate. To get here, take the number 2 bus from outside the train station.

Once, when I was touring the islands of Greece, I had stopped off at the island of Crete after dark and went down the road a ways near the palace of Knossos.  One of the first roads ever built was underneath my feet and the chariot tracks were still visible, even by the view of the moon.  I walked to a medium-sized white rock on the side and sat down, and just as I did a horse came clip-clopping out of the darkness.  It was black and majestic and it frightened me a tiny with its size.  I shrank back as it passed and for just a second, I could swear it looked as though someone had been walking behind it and had ducked into the trees.  The horse passed me with barely a glance, but the shadows across the road seemed to be flitting about and my blood began to burn with adrenaline.  I stood, but not before I saw the shadow of a hand with a knife rise up to fall across the rock I had just been sitting on.  I let out a small scream and ran for the safety of my hotel.  True story?  You decide.

I love suspense, writing, reading, meeting new people, and doing random stuff with my husband and eight children. 6. Have a read of product reviews on gift websites and online shops or even listen to recommendations from people, they are generally a good guide as to whether something is worth buying or not and may also provide some inspiration.

7. Don’t worry about the cost of an item. Just because it is more expensive, doesn’t necessarily mean it is better. It really is the though that counts most of the time.

8. Something handmade can show the recipient how much you care and will often become a treasured gift because of the thought, time and effort that went into it.

9. If you don’t get much time with a certain person, having a night out together at a restaurant or a weekend away can often be a truly romantic gesture or a chance for friends to catch up and enjoy each other’s company. The gift doesn’t have to be a material one.

10. Finally don’t forget to make the effort and wrap the present in pretty paper or a nicely decorated bag. Make sure to include a tag so they know who the present is from.
